Week Commencing 14.01.19

This week in maths we have been exploring money. Noticing the features of both coins and notes, understanding their value and then arranging them from the smallest to largest amount.

In Epic, we have introduced the topic Meerkat Mayhem. We began by creating questions that we wanted answers to and moved on to discussing the features of a meerkat such as where they live, what they eat and what they look like. Using our descriptive language, we created a work bank and then generated exciting sentences from this. We ended the week by exploring the facts and opinions of meerkats and found the answers to the questions that we had at the beginning of the week.

The children have settled back in to the new spring term and have wowed us with their writing presentation. This week in Epic, we had a key delivered to the classroom. We had no idea where it came from! The children wrote down some questions they had about the key and what did it open? Each day the children have been planning their story. On Friday, the children will use their ideas from throughout the week to write their own story based on the 'magic key'.

In maths this week we have been working on multiplication and division. We have been halving cubes and shapes, then doubling a number and understanding the pattern in their calculations.

This week our class elves have been causing mischief with their magic! The children are excited to see what they have been up to and have been discussing, then writing about their antics. We have described what Father Christmas looks like and then designed and created 3D reindeer Christmas cards to take home.

In maths the children have been telling the time - using clocks to show us where the long hand and short hand should be to demonstrate 'o'clock' and 'half past'. The children then created their own clocks to take home and continue to practise telling the time.

This week the children also performed in our Christmas production of 'We're Going on a Father Christmas Hunt'. Each child had a part to play and we are extremely proud of their efforts.

This week in maths we introduced weighing scales to measure the weight of objects found around the classroom. The children discussed which items were heavier and lighter, then placed their findings in to a sentence using 'because' to show their understanding.

In Epic we continued with our non-chronological reports and focused on 'subheadings'. The children helped us to create three subheadings based on reindeers and then wrote their own sentences to go underneath the subheadings. The children are extremely knowledgeable on reindeers after the last two weeks!

We also practiced our Christmas production and began designing our 3D Christmas cards. We look forward to next week when the Christmas fun begins!

Week Commencing 19.11.18

This week in Epic the children have been introduced to non-chronological reports and over the next two weeks, they will be creating their own report on reindeer. To complete their reports, we are beginning to understand the different between fact and opinion, we have looked through non-fiction books to hunt for different text features such as a title, a subheading, index and labels. The children have labelled their reindeer paintings, described the features of their reindeer and then went in to the ICT computer room and used a search engine to complete their fact finder sheet on reindeer. We will continue this topic on to next week.

In maths this week we have been ordering items by height, using cubes to measure and then record our answer. We then introduced rulers and used them to measure the length of different objects and remembered to add the unit cm after our answer.
